Mind-Body Psychology
The intelligence of the body is often unexplored in traditional therapy. Yet the story told by our bodies is often more powerful and significant than the narratives we create with our words. Traditional talking therapy often takes a "top down" approach, where the focus is on developing a coherent narrative and developing insight in order to inspire therapeutic change. However, in recent years, many mental health professionals and researchers have come to understand that simply talking about experiences - especially traumatic ones - does not always result in positive change and, at worst, can leave people feeling re-traumatised. Recent evidence tells us that a "bottom up" approach, where targeted somatic or mind-body techniques are utilised, is safer and more effective for many clients, particularly those who have experienced trauma or early attachment wounds.
I specialise in providing a relational and integrative mind-body approach, which combines traditional talking therapy with simple mind-body techniques that help with trauma symptoms, anxiety or overwhelming feelings. The techniques used are designed to help you feel present and calm. Mind-body psychology can be a stand alone therapy for trauma or anxiety, or it can be combined with trauma memory processing (e.g., EMDR or Trauma-Focused CBT). Mind-body techniques are often very helpful at the beginning of therapy, as they can provide you with the stabilisation and sense of safety that is often needed before starting more more trauma memory focused work (e.g., EMDR or TF-CBT).
This type of therapy can be carried out safely and effectively either in person or by video call. Please contact me if you are interested in booking a consultation or if you have any questions.
